The Xtreme Football League (also known as simply the XFL) was a short-lived American football league run by WWE. The league called itself "the way football was supposed to be played."[1] However, the league fizzled out in 2001 after only one season. However, several players went on to other leagues and some were quite successful (such as Tommy Maddox and arguably the league's best known player, Rod "He Hate Me" Smith).

The XFL returned for a season in 2020, and returns again in February 2023 with these teams:[2]

XFL North Division

St. Louis Battlehawks

  • D.C. Defenders
  • Seattle Sea Dragons
  • Vegas Vipers

XFL South Division

Arlington Renegades

  • Houston Roughnecks
  • Orlando Guardians
  • San Antonio Brahmas (plays at the Alamadome)

How to Surpass the NFL

The XFL could surpass the NFL by:

  • prohibiting liberal censorship of religious and off-field speech by players
  • prohibiting sham tryouts used by the NFL
  • promoting athleticism rather than a mindless, pro-gambling winning-is-everything attitude
  • increasing percentage of time that is for playing the sport
  • promoting chivalry as part of the game
  • actually try to help the communities where the games are played, in contrast with the NFL that takes more than it gives
  • rewarding athleticism, such as long completed passes to wide receivers rather than easy short passes to tight ends

2001 Teams

  • Birmingham Bolts
  • Chicago Enforcers
  • NY/NJ Hitmen
  • Memphis Maniax
  • Las Vegas Outlaws
  • Los Angeles Xtreme
  • Orlando Rage
  • San Francisco Demons

2020 Teams

  • Dallas Renegades
  • Houston Roughnecks
  • Los Angeles Wildcats
  • Seattle Dragons
  • DC Defenders
  • New York Guardians
  • St. Louis BattleHawks
  • Tampa Bay Vipers
