Temptation is "when we are drawn to something or someone and we have a desire to do something (usually something evil or sinful) because we think that there is a prospect of pleasure or advantage in finally obtaining the thing we want."[1] As far as prevailing over temptation, the Bible teaches that one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is self-control. See Galatians 5:23
