The Onion is a weekly parody newspaper audience that pokes fun of many subjects, especially America and world leaders. It does not have any political agenda beyond making fun of authority figures and has a balanced approach to lampooning both liberals and conservatives. The Onion was originally published in Madison, Wisconsin, by students attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison,[1] and has since grown to national distribution.
From 2019 to 2024, The Onion was owned by the private equity-funded group G/O Media. In April 2024 it was announced that the owner “sold the site to a new Chicago-based firm called Global Tetrahedron, which is 'made up of four digital media veterans with a profound love for The Onion and comedy-based content,' G/O Media CEO Jim Spanfeller said in a memo to staff Thursday.”[2]
