In-n-Out Burger

In-n-Out Burger is a privately owned chain of restaurants founded in 1948 by Harry and Esther Snyder in Baldwin Park, California. Since that time the menu has remained unchanged, containing a simple selection of hamburgers, fries, sodas, and milkshakes. The restaurants offer hamburgers, cheeseburgers, and their famous Double-Double: two slices of meat and two slices of cheese. Customers can select additional options not seen on the menu, sometimes referred to as "secret menu items", though In-N-Out denies any secrecy. These items include the option to have your burger or fries served "animal style" which for fries includes spread, cheese, and grilled onions; for burgers it includes mustard-fried hamburger patties, extra spread, grilled onions, and pickles. Customers can also order burgers with as many patties and cheese slices as they wish up to 20 of each. Popular options include the "3x3" and "4x4", which as the names suggest, include three or four of both meat and cheese.

Originally exclusive to California, in recent decades it has expanded beyond the state's borders to more of the Western U.S. It has locations in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Texas.

Since the 1980s it has placed Bible verse citations on the packaging of four food items:

• Drink cups: John 3:16
• Milkshake cups: Proverbs 3:5
• Burger wrappers: Revelation 3:20
• Double-Double wrappers: Nahum 1:7

In-N-Out corporate offices have stated that the reason they have not expanded beyond the Western United States is due to their strict policy that their ingredients, especially beef, be "always fresh, never frozen." For this reason, no store can be built more than 300 miles away from the nearest processing facility so their delivery trucks never need to drive more than one day to a store in any given region—thus eliminating the need to freeze any meat, cheese, or produce. In-N-Out specially selects the cattle which will be processed in their facilities into ground beef for their patties to insure the highest quality.

While efforts have been made by professional sports franchises to open In-N-Out concessions in their stadiums, the company has declined such opportunities due to the high costs of stadium operations, the difficult logistics, and the complexities of sponsorships preferring to keep sponsorships to a more local and community level, like schools.
