Jiang Zemin succeeded Chinese dictator Deng Xiaoping when the latter died in 1997. Jiang refused to improve China’s record on human rights, and Christianity and democracy still remain suppressed there. There are one-party elections now precipitated by the Tiananmen Square massacre.
