Roger Brooke Taney was the Fifth Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court (1836-1864) succeeding John Marshall and preceding Salmon P. Chase. He was nominated for the Supreme Court by president Andrew Jackson.

Chief Justice is most famous for the decision he wrote in Dred Scott v. Sanford, which rendered multiple slavery compromises void and helped cause the American Civil War. Prior to being elevated to the Court, he was Jackson's Secretary of the Treasury and Attorney General.
