The cocoa bean is native to South America, and is mainly used to create chocolate. Botanically, it is known as Theobroma cacao.[1] Theobroma means "food of the gods." The cocoa bean contains both caffeine and theobromine. Both are xanthines.
About 3,500,000 tons of cocoa beans are harvested annually.[2] Around 70% of the crop today comes from Africa, 12% from the Americas, and 18% from Oceania, mostly Indonesia.
