Braveheart is a motion picture released in 1995, directed by and starring Mel Gibson in the title role. It ostensibly depicts the career of the medieval Scottish warlord William Wallace in his fight for Scottish independence against the Plantaganet Norman kings of England, but has been criticised for historical inaccuracy. Nevertheless, its release in the United Kingdom coincided with a surge in support for the Scottish National Party (SNP).
