Binge drinking

Binge drinking is the habit of many people of indulging in bouts of heavy drinking, often with friends or associates, and is associated with a wide spectrum of social ills including sexual promiscuity, violence, vandalism, alcoholism and long term liver disease. The causes of binge drinking have been much debated, and include societal and family breakdown, increased availability of alcohol through extended licensing hours, the falling price of alcohol (in relative terms), the production and marketing of alcopops aimed at young people, and the development of vertical drinking establishments aimed at the young and with few attractions for an older clientèle who might encourage restraint.
