Benjamin West (Springfield, Pa., 1738 - London, 1820) was an American Neoclassical painter, a founder of the Royal Academy (1768). His paintings had mainly historical, religious, and mythological subjects. West had an important leadership and influence on later artists. Among his students we could include Charles Willson Peale, Gilbert Stuart, John Linnell, Edward Savage, Thomas Sully and John Trumbull (all studied with West in London).
Benjamin West was one of the first American painters to win a wide reputation in Europe; there he was known as "the American Raphael".
