Affton is an unincorporated census-designated place (CDP) in South St. Louis County, Missouri. It had a population of 20,307 at the 2010 census.

History

Affton was named for Johann George Aff, a German immigrant who settled in the area in the early 1860s and prospered as a farmer and merchant. A post office bearing the name was first erected in 1886. A nearby, later community was for a time known as "Affton Heights."[1]

Geography

The Affton CDP lies a short distance southwest of the city of St. Louis, its northern boundary being formed by Heege Road and Missouri State Highway 366, and its southeastern boundary by Interstate 55. Missouri State Highway 30 (locally known as Gravois Road) is the central thoroughfare. Its official coordinates are 38°33′04″N 90°19′25″W.

The community has a total area of 4.60 square miles, and an average elevation of 560 feet.[2]

Demographics

At the 2010 census, Affton had a total of 20,307 inhabitants, grouped into 8,838 households, with a population density of 4,409.8 people per square mile. This figure represented a slight decrease from the 2000 census, when Affton had a population of 20,535. 94.37% of the inhabitants were White, 1.69% were African-American, 0.16% were Native American, 2.05% were Asian, 0.01% were Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 0.35% were from some other race, and 1.37% were from two or more races. Hispanics of any race were 2.06% of the population.

The median age in Affton was 41 years, with 19.9% of inhabitants under the age of 18, 8.4% between 18 and 24 years old, 26.8% between 25 and 44, 28.8% between 45 and 64, and 16.1% 65 years old or older. The sex ratio was 48.0% male, 52.0% female.[3]
