Until May 2015 the state formed a union together with the Lugansk People's Republic, called Novorossiya. After the declaration of independence was adopted in April 2014, the Ukrainian government started a big offensive. On May 11, 2014 referendums were held, with a majority voting for the region's sovereignty.[1]

The country is ruled by the party "Donetsk Republic", that was founded in 2005 and banned in 2007. Since 2014 it is active again.
