Hamburgers have their origin with emigrants coming to America from Germany in the 1850s. Hamburg is the name of a city in Germany. Hamburg beef, either salted or smoked, was brought on the ocean crossing as it kept through the long sea voyage. It was minced and sometimes combined with onions or breadcrumbs. It was not until 1921 that White Castle Hamburger was founded. Modern hamburgers are served at a number of fast food restaurants. Hamburgers nowadays are typically served on a bun and may come with a number of toppings:
