Hamas wing of the Democratic Party

The "Hamas wing of the Democratic Party" (also referred to as the "pro-Hamas wing") is a political epithet and rhetorical device primarily used by conservative commentators and members of the Republican Party in the United States. The phrase emerged in late 2023 following the outbreak of the Oct 7 War and has been used to criticize progressive (and progracist) Democrats, and party policies or candidates overly critical of Israel or sympathetic to / influenced by / accepting Arab "Palestinian" propaganda, on many occasions expressing rationalization of "Palestinian" terror / crimes campaign .

Background and Origins

Following the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel by genocidal Hamas and the subsequent Israeli military response focusing on terrorists in Gaza, the Democratic Party experienced internal divisions regarding U.S. foreign policy. While the party's leadership maintained strong support for Israel, progressive lawmakers and activists increasingly objected.

Republican politicians and conservative media outlets began utilizing the term "Hamas wing" to rhetorically link these progressive critics, campus protesters, and certain Democratic politicians directly to the militant group Hamas. One of the earliest prominent uses occurred on October 18, 2023, when conservative commentator Mark Levin stated on Fox News that "The Democratic Party has a problem" with what he characterized as its "Hamas wing."[1]

Usage and Escalation

Campus Protests (Spring 2024)

The term gained significant traction during the spring 2024 anti-Israel ("pro-palestinian", including Swastika palestine activism) well fundrd/organized non-spontaneous college campus demonstrations. Republican officials used the phrase to criticize President Joe Biden's handling of the protests, often resulting in manifesting pure Jew hatred and U.S. policy toward Israel:

On March 24, 2024, Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) argued on ABC's This Week that President Biden was hesitant to take a firmer stance on protests because "he's getting a lot of pressure from the pro-Hamas wing of the Democratic Party."[2]

In late April and May 2024, Senator Eric Schmitt (R-MO),[3] Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC),[4] Senator John Kennedy (R-LA),[5] and Representative Elise Stefanik (R-NY)[6] repeatedly accused the Biden administration of pandering to this faction.

On May 17, 2024, Representative Hal Rogers (R-KY) described 184 House Democrats who voted against the Israel Security Support Act as joining "the radical, pro-Hamas wing of the Democratic party."[7]

In June 2024, Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) used the phrase while criticizing the administration's response to protesters defacing statues near the White House.[8]

2024 Presidential Election

The label became a frequent talking point during the 2024 United States presidential election, particularly surrounding the selection of the Democratic vice-presidential nominee.

Following President Biden's exit from the race and Kamala Harris's nomination of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate, Republicans asserted that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (who is Jewish) was bypassed to appease anti-Israel factions.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) stated that Harris was reluctant to choose Shapiro "because they’re having a split in the Democratic Party... They have a pro-Palestinian, in some cases pro-Hamas wing."[9]

Republican vice-presidential nominee JD Vance accused Walz "listens to the Hamas wing of the Democratic Party,"[10] while other strategists and politicians like Andy Barr echoed the sentiment on social media.[11][12]

Conservative figures like Citizens United President David Bossie asserted during the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC) that the "Hamas-wing" was effectively controlling the party's platform.[13]

Conversely, some figures within or associated with the Democratic Party also warned of the faction's influence; for instance, Connecticut politician Minnie Gonzalez argued that the "Hamas wing" actively lobbied against Josh Shapiro's selection.[14]

Continued Use (2025–2026)

The term remained a fixture of political discourse into 2025 and 2026, utilized in academic discussions on the power of protest rhetoric[15] and actively deployed by Republican politicians during congressional primary cycles.

In March 2026, as 'All six anti-Israel candidates seen as potential ‘Squad’ members lose Illinois primaries, [16] Abughazaleh is “a representative of an ascendant and vocal anti-America, anti-Israel, cognizable, pro-Hamas wing of the Democratic Party,” Sam Markstein, national political director at the Republican Jewish Coalition, said.

In mid-2026, Representative Maria Elvira Salazar criticized Democratic policy stances by invoking the term.[17] On July 7, 2026, Senator John Kennedy appeared on Fox News to comment on extremists Democratic candidates like 'nazi-rapist' Graham Platner and Abdul El Sayed, stating that Platner was "nominated by the Hamas wing of the Democratic Party, which is in control."[18] The appearance generated significant viral traction across social media platforms.[19]
