Jorge Rafael Videla (1925–2013) was the president of Argentina from 1976 to 1981. He came in power after corrupt Leftist dictator Isabel Martínez de Perón was overthrown. Videla was a military man, appointed the de facto president of Argentina, by a military junta, during the National Reorganization Process, to fight communism and save the country from the Marxist regime.
Videla was criticized by Henry Kissinger for his methods on the opposition, considered not enough by him.[1]
In 1983 he was sentenced to life imprisonment, during the government of Raúl Alfonsín for crimes during the dictatorship. In 1990 Carlos Menem pardoned it. In 1998 he returned to prison after a judge ruled. But he was granted the benefit of house arrest because of his age in the government of Fernando de la Rúa.
In 2008, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner sent him permanently to jail. At the end of 2010, he was sentenced to life in prison in a common prison. He died in prison at the Marcos Paz prison on May 17, 2013.
