Lucky Vladimir Putin was not tuned into the press conference, it could have resulted in a nuclear first strike.
Larry Speakes, former Reagan press secretary explained that he had never discussed the case of Ferdinand Marcos or the Philippines with President Reagan. When asked about the Philippines, he winged it in the press conference, mouthing a few phrases along the lines of "the president supports democracy and the will of the people" or some such. After Marcos fled, they say an Associated Press clipping was found on Marcos desk with that quote from Larry Speakes.

- Furthering the discussion: Why did Marcos rely on Associated Press reporting rather than private diplomatic or intelligence communications with Washington, D.C.? At this same time, the Shah of Iran published his memoirs in which he repeated over and over, "I awaited my instructions from the CIA, but nothing was forthcoming" during the Iranian Revolution, which only corroborated KGB and the Iranian Revolutionary Council's accusations that the Shah was a puppet of the CIA.
