“ The U.S. and NATO will soon have lost their big proxy war against Russia. In light of this reality the much larger, centuries old narrative of the superior West is also breaking down. This will have global consequences for decades to come. ”

—Moon of Alabama, July 18, 2023. [1]

“ The empire has blundered itself to an existential war and, therefore, the last war of the empire. When the end comes, the empire will lie as usual and declare victory, but everyone else will know the truth, especially the vassals. ”

—Anonymous Chinese scholar [2]

“ Russia's invasion of Ukraine, initiated on February 24, 2022, is among the most—if not the most—significant shocks to the global order since World War II. ”

—:::Russia, Ukraine, and the Future World Order, Published online by Cambridge University Press: 27 October 2022

“ The U.S.-dominated NATO alliance, the European Union, the rules-based international order and all the post-World War II structures, which held the Western world together for nearly eight decades. They are all now crumbling around us. ”

—Scott Ritter, Requiem for NATO’s Nightmare, July 28, 2023.

Favorite YouTube recordings

  • Krzysztof Penderecki, Cello Concerto #2, Penderecki conducting with Siegfried Palm. (inspired by the Nazi invasion of Poland, 1939 when Penderecki was 6 years old).
  • Prokofiev, Romeo and Juliettt, World Orchestra. (all those female violinists know how to pump up the volume when needed).
  • Ravel, Daphnes et Chloe, Wilhelm Furtwangler 1944 restored. Comment: This magnetic tape recording was expropriated by the Red Army in 1945 and returned to Germany in 1986 as a gesture of good faith shortly before the Fall of the Berlin Wall when it finally became available to the public, marking the end of the Cold War. It is one of the earliest orchestral magnetic tape recordings made. In later issues, Deutsche Gramaphone engineers have reduced some of the over modulation, however Furtwangler's unique interpretative qualities are ever present.
  • Waltraud Meier, Die Walkure, as Sieglinde (genuine pirate recording. Even in a concert performance made in what looks like a high school gymnasium with poor video and audio, Meier appears in character which is why she's considered one the greatest Wagnerian actresses of her time).
  • Henley Heyn / Der Männer Sippe. Outstanding performance in this starter role (whatever happened to her?), especially her enthusiasm for the part. This was filmed in Los Angelas, I think, and the conductor and orchestra still have quite a bit to learn about providing balance for the vocalist. But Henley has no problem with it, and at no point is drowned out despite their lack of restraint.
  • Waltraud Meier and Barenboim. Liebestod. (Outdoor performance, which is extremely difficult to engineer, somewhere in Catalonia, I think. I post it here to compensate in fairness to the performers for the poor video and audio quality of the above and to illustrate the teamwork of Meier, Barenboim, and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra made up of Palestinians and Jews founded by Barenboim).
  • Richard Strauss, Alpine Symphony, Yevgeny Mravinsky, Leningrad Philharmonic 1962. (augmented brass you will not hear in other performances of this oft recorded piece).
  • Holländer - Die Frist ist um - Wagner. Incredible butchery, but a valiant determined effort. She even gets lost halfway through. This is what happens when you have somebody schooled in the classics of Mozart and Beethoven approach Wagner, and why the importance of the words. This doesn't takeaway from a person's technical skill. Wagner demands from the interpreter to put something of themselves into the performance, and not just rote memorization. The spirit of the music is missing. She's still learning, and may not ever pick it up. She did much better with Nur eine waffe taugt. (Here's where she gets lost, "Yet one hope alone can save me", hence the importance of the words.)
  • George London - Der Fliegende Holländer - Die Frist ist um - Bayreuth 1956. What the Dutchman's monologue is supposed to sound like in this near classic, definitive performance.
  • Mvt. 4. Have to add this cause of the personal significance in my own family (it was my mother's favorite).
  • Die Frau ohne Schatten - some of the most tragically beautiful music ever written.
  • Du salbtest mir die Füße (Thou annointest my feet). Germany's leading heldentenor Jonas Kaufman and bass baritone Rene Pape combine in this short clip. The subtext to this section is Psalm 45 (Thy throne, oh God, is forever...). It was highly personal to Wagner, who believed himself to have had a Jewish father. In response to the question Jews often ask each other, "What think ye Christ? Whose son is he?", Psalm 45 is the answer Jesus referred to when he said, "Why then does David in spirit call him Lord?"
  • Du wuchsest mir die Füsse (Thou washest my feet).
  • Maria Zakharova Kalinka dancing in Rondo form. This ancient, traditional Jewish style of music was adopted by Russian civilization and several other Eastern European cultures who made it their own.
