The Xtreme Football League[1](also known as simply the XFL) is a spring professional American football league. It had a short-lived run in 2020, as Covid hit, when it was run by WWE. The league called itself "the way football was supposed to be played."[2] However, the league fizzled out in 2001 after only one season. However, several players went on to other leagues and some were quite successful (such as Tommy Maddox and arguably the league's best known player, Rod "He Hate Me" Smith).
The XFL returned for a season in 2020, and returns again on February 18, 2023, at 3pm on ABC.[3] NFL Hall of Fame defensive back Rod Woodson is one of the head coaches.[4]. The XFL's 2023 season has these teams:[5]
The XFL has signed an agreement with the NFL, however, and may extend some of the NFL's harm further. Alternatively, it is possible that initially the XFL has had to "play ball" with the NFL in order to obtain television contracts, and that the long-term plan is to compete with the NFL.
On September 28, 2023, the XFL announced their intent to merge with the USFL prior to the 2024 season. More details will be revealed at a later date.[6]
