The Atlanta Falcons are a National Football League (NFL) team based in Atlanta, Georgia. They are members of the National Football Conference (NFC) South Division.
History and League Success
The Falcons entered the league as an expansion team in 1966. Both the NFL and the AFL were heavily interested in placing a team in Atlanta (both leagues had sponsored preseason games in the city). Ultimately, the NFL forced Atlanta (the city) to decide on a league; it chose the NFL.
The Falcons have generally been mediocre in their history; they have only made two Super Bowl appearances (1999 and 2017; the 2017 appearance was notable for the team's total collapse after holding a 28-3 lead late in the third quarter against the New England Patriots and ultimately losing 28-34 in the only overtime game in Super Bowl history).
