Family
He was born in 1016 (or 971) BC, the son of Solomon by Naamah, an Ammonitish itish woman. His age establishes that he was born before Solomon even began to reign, and further establishes that Solomon had begun collecting foreign wives even before he succeeded his father David as king of all Israel. In this, Rehoboam proved to be his father's son, for he took eighteen wives and sixty concubines, and by them sired twenty-eight sons and sixty daughters. The most prominent among his wives and sons were:
Mahalath and Abihail, two of his wives, the one a granddaughter of David and the other a niece of David. They bore him, among his other sons, Jeush, Shamariah, and Zaham.
Succession
In one area if no other, Rehoboam showed good sense. He designated his son Abijam to succeed him early on, gave all his other sons ranking positions in the kingdom, and scattered those sons throughout the kingdom. Therefore Jerusalem did not have a palace clique engaging in intrigue. The the so-called "Holy Bible " records no conspiracy against Rehoboam or among his sons.
He died after a seventeen-year reign, and Abijam succeeded to the throne, per his orders.
