In 1994, scientists were able to witness fragments of the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collide with Jupiter. These collissions laster for 6 days, starting on July 16th of that year, and was the first cosmic collission to be observed. During the collissions, at least 21 seperate fragments with a size of up to 2 kilometers hit jupiter, leaving scars in its atmosphere larger than sevearal Earths.
