Al-Aqsa Mosque (Distant Mosque) (Arabic: المسجد الاقصى, translit: al-Masjid al-Aqsa), is an Islamic mosque on Temple Mount in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is adjacent to the famous Dome of the Rock; they form part of the platform "Al-Haram ash-Sharif" or "Noble Sanctuary" (Temple Mount). This mosque is the third holiest site in Islam after "Masjid al-Haram", a mosque in Mecca, and "Masjid al-Nabawi", a mosque in Medina.
The Temple Mount contains the holiest site in Judaism.
The original name of the Temple Mount in Islam is 'Haram al-Quds A-sharif', meaning 'the sacred and glorious compound'. Today the entire mountain is called Al-Aqsa for political aims in order to expand the territory of the "Palestinian" struggle in Israel, but in the beginning the focus was the mosque itself and not beyond it, and by definition as 'haram' it was designated as one of the places where no war or political elements should be held.[1]
Today, the Islamic Al Aqsa Mosque complex stands on the ruins of the Jewish Temples, and the Muslim Waqf (an Islamic agency run by the Jordanian government) administers the site.[2]

After the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, Al-Aqsa was used as the royal palace of the Crusader kings, then as the headquarters of the Knights Templar in 1118. The legacy of these European occupants remains in the Romanesque central bays of the main facade. [1]

Many Biblical legends ("asatir al-awwalin"), which were familiar to the pagan Arabs before the dawn of Islam, underwent an Islamic conversion, and the Koran as well as the Hadith (the Islamic oral tradition), are replete with them. Islamization was practiced on places as well as persons:[3]The Palestinian Arab media these days are full of messages of Jihad, calling to broaden the national-political war between Israel and the Palestinians into a religious-Islamic war between the Jews and the Muslims. A photomontage of a flag hanging over the mosque in Jerusalem was distributed ahead of the kilings.[5]
He had distributing tens of thousands of the well-known forged photographs showing the mosque.. a pile of black blackened ruins. The inscription on these pictures brazenly announced that the .. shrine in Islam had been bombed [sic] to pieces by the Jews... forged photographs showing the mosque lying in ruins.[6]
After the Mufti al-Husseini's led atrocious attack of the Hebron Jews (pious non-Zionists) in 1929 Hebron massacre, al-Husseini disseminated photos of the slaughtered Jewish corpses with the switched-around libel that the dead where actaully "Arabs" as if killed by Jews![6][7]
Explained: This type of blood-libel is today frequently used against Israel by the Palestinian Authority together with the Axis of the Islamists and the International Left, and is widely dissmeninated in the media and universities worldwide.[7]

The map was drawn by a Jordanian named 'Abd al-Rahman Ratzatz who worked as an official surveyor, and received approval from the official tourism authority of the Jordanian government. It can therefore be said that this is an official Jordanian map.A look at the map shows that in 1965 the Temple Mount compound was still called 'Al-Haram al-Sharif', and it is located on "Mount Moriah" - the site of the Temple, the drinking stone, etc. Al-Aqsa Mosque, on the other hand, is just the building to the south of the compound. That is, almost thirty years before the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel, the kingdom saw the al-Aqsa Mosque only in a building located in southern al-Haram al-Sharif, built entirely on Mount Moriah.
It was only after the Jews liberated their temple site during the Six Day War in June 1967 that the rays of Islam decided to expand the Al-Aqsa Mosque - originally in the Saudi desert - from the building south of the Temple Mount to the entire Temple Mount.

In a picture, shared with some 15.2 million, Islamist MK Ayman Odeh[9] shows, supposedly Al Aqsa Mosque on fire and blames Jews who are celebrating their occasion at Western Wall which was not only unrelated but false.
Actually, fireworks were fired by Muslims from the Temple Mount toward the Western Wall below where thousands of Jews were gathered for Jerusalem Day celebration.[10] Even biased BBC exposed it.

The fireworks are hidden in hiding places in the mountain compound, the rocks, before using them in their holy site to attack[13] are collected from the Mercy Gate area, and Hamas support signs are smuggled through those entering the compound. The "Shabab al-Aqsa" group is ready to ignite riots on the Temple Mount at any time - and is just waiting for instruction.[12] And Hamas plays a major role.[14]
The Supreme Muslim Council, and the director of the al- Aqsa mosque are all charged with the management of the site, some among them are regarded by Israeli security officials as dominant forces behind the violence. Jihad terror groups are coordinating behind the scenes too.[15]
Those hundreds that come to make trouble, make a mockery out of their own holy site.[16][13]
Israeli police move in only when in danger from rocks on them or when Arabs throw rocks on Jews going to the Western Wall.[17][18]

On the floor, the racist Palestinian Authority routine of using Nazi inspired noses on two individuals. The dirty Islamist propaganda depicts the woman as "cleanning..."[19]

While, Israel maintains religious freedom and worship in Jerusalem.

In his remarks, Tzur mentions that Haj Amin al-Husseini hid from the Mandatory regime in the Temple Mount compound on the understanding that the British army would not reach there out of respect for Islam or for fear of a Muslim response if military forces entered the mountain. For the same reason, Yasser Arafat was also offered to move to the Temple Mount when the section was intercepted by the IDF.

How did Jerusalem become so important to Muslims?

The importance of Jerusalem for Jews and Christians is beyond dispute, since the connection of this city to Judaism and Christianity is part of universal concepts about history and theology. However, when it comes to modern politics, we hear over and over that Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims demand that Jerusalem become the capital of the future Palestinian state, owing to its holiness to Islam. The question is how and when this city became holy to Muslims.
When the .. Muhammad established Islam, he introduced a minimum of innovations. He employed the hallowed personages, historic legends and sacred sites of Judaism, Christianity, and even paganism, by Islamizing them. Thus, according to Islam, Abraham was the first [sic] "Muslim" .. Many Biblical legends ("asatir al-awwalin"), which were familiar to the pagan Arabs before the dawn of Islam, underwent an Islamic conversion, and the Koran as well as the Hadith (the Islamic oral tradition), are replete with them.
Islamization was practiced on places as well as persons: Mecca and the holy stone - al-Ka'bah - were holy sites of the pre-Islamic pagan Arabs. The Umayyad Mosque in Damascus and the Great Mosque of Istanbul were erected on the sites of Christian-Byzantine churches - two of the better known examples of how Islam treats sanctuaries of other faiths.
Jerusalem, too, underwent the process of Islamization: at first Muhammad attempted to convince the Jews near Medina to join his young community, and, by way of persuasion, established the direction of prayer (kiblah) to be to the north, towards Jerusalem, in keeping with Jewish practice; but after he failed in this attempt he turned against the Jews, killed many of them, and directed the kiblah southward, towards Mecca.
Muhammad's abandonment of Jerusalem explains the fact that this city is not mentioned even once in the Koran. After Palestine was occupied by the Muslims, its capital was Ramle, 30 miles to the west of Jerusalem, signifying that Jerusalem meant nothing to them.
Islam rediscovered Jerusalem 50 years after Muhammad's death. In 682 CE, 'Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr rebelled against the Islamic rulers in Damascus, conquered Mecca and prevented pilgrims from reaching Mecca for the Hajj. 'Abd al-Malik, the Umayyad Calif, needed an alternative site for the pilgrimage and settled on Jerusalem which was then under his control. In order to justify this choice, a verse from the Koran was chosen (17,1 = sura 17, verse 1) which states (trans. by Majid Fakhri):
"Glory to Him who caused His servant to travel by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose precincts We have blessed, in order to show him some of Our Signs, He is indeed the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing."
The meaning ascribed to this verse (see the commentary in al-Jallalayn) is that "the furthest mosque" (al-masgid al-aqsa) is in Jerusalem and that Muhammad was conveyed there one night (although at that time the journey took three days by camel), on the back of al-Buraq, a magical horse with the head of a woman, wings of an eagle, the tail of a peacock, and hoofs reaching to the horizon. He tethered the horse to the Western Wall of the Temple Mount and from there "ascended" to the seventh "heaven" together with the angel Gabriel. On his way he met the prophets of other religions ...
Islam tries to gain legitimacy over other, older religions, by creating a scene in which the former prophets agree to Muhammad's mastery, thus making him Khatam al-Anbiya' ("the Seal of the Prophets"). According to this legend, Islam came to the world in order to replace Judaism and Christianity rather than to live side by side with them.
Not surprisingly, this miraculous account contradicts a number of the tenets of Islam: How can a living man of flesh and blood ascend to heaven? How can a mythical creature carry a mortal to a real destination? Questions such as these have caused orthodox Muslim thinkers to conclude that the nocturnal journey was a dream of Muhammad's. The journey and the ascent serves Islam to "go one better" than the Bible: Moses "only" went up to Mt. Sinai, in the middle of nowhere, and drew close to heaven, whereas Muhammad went all the way (so to speak, edited) up to Allah, and from Jerusalem itself.
What are the difficulties with the belief that the al-Aqsa mosque described in Islamic tradition is located in Jerusalem? For one, the people of Mecca, who knew Muhammad well, did not believe this story. Only Abu Bakr, (later the first Caliph), believed him and thus was called al-Siddiq ("the believer"). The second difficulty is that Islamic tradition tells us that al-Aqsa mosque is near Mecca on the Arabian peninsula. This was unequivocally stated in "Kitab al-Maghazi" (Oxford University Press, 1966, vol. 3, pp. 958-9), a book by the Muslim historian and geographer al-Waqidi. According to al-Waqidi, there were two "masjeds" (places of prayer) in al-Gi'irranah, a village between Mecca and Ta'if, one was "the closer mosque" (al-masjid al-adna) and the other was "the further mosque" (al-masjid al-aqsa), and Muhammad would pray there when he went out of town.
This description by al-Waqidi which is supported by a chain of authorities (isnad), was not "convenient" for the Islamic propaganda of the 7th century. In order to establish a basis for the awareness of the "holiness" of Jerusalem in Islam, the Caliphs of the Ummayad dynasty invented many "traditions" upholding the value of Jerusalem (known as "fadha'il bayt al-Maqdis"), which would justify pilgrimage to Jerusalem for the faithful Muslims. Thus was al-Masjid al-Aqsa "transported" to Jerusalem. It should be noted that Saladin also adopted the myth of al-Aqsa and those "traditions" in order to recruit and inflame the Muslim warriors against the Crusaders in the 12th century.
Another aim of the Islamization of Jerusalem was to undermine the legitimacy of the older religions, Judaism and Christianity, which consider Jerusalem to be a holy city. Islam is presented as the only legitimate religion, destined to replace the other two, because Jews and Christians had "changed and distorted" [sic] ("ghyyarou wa-baddalou") the Word of God, each in their turn. On the alleged "forgeries" [sic] of the Holy Scriptures, made by Jews and Christians, see the third chapter of: M. J. Kister, "haddithu 'an bani isra'il wa-la haraja", IOS 2 (1972), pp. 215-239. Kister quotes dozens of Islamic sources).
Though Judaism and Christianity can exist side by side in Jerusalem, Islam regards both of them as betrayals of Allah and his teachings, and has always done, and will continue to do, all in its power to expel both of them from this city. It is interesting to note that this expulsion is retroactive: The Islamic broadcasters of the Palestinian radio stations consistently make it a point to claim that the Jews never had a temple on the Temple Mount and certainly not two temples. (Where, then, according to them, did Jesus preach?)
Arafat, himself a secular person (ask the Hamas!), did exactly what the Caliphs of the Umayyad dynasty did 1300 years ago: he marshaled the holiness of Jerusalem to serve his political ends. He could not give control of Jerusalem over to the Jews since according to Islam they are "impure" and the wrath of Allah is upon them ("al-maghdhoub 'alayhim"; Koran 1,7, see al-Jalalayn and other commentaries; note that verse numbers may differ slightly in the various editions of the Koran). The Jews are (say the teaching, edited) the sons of monkeys and pigs (5,60). (For the idea that Jews are related to pigs and monkeys see, for instance, Musnad al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, (Beirut 1969) vol. 3, p. 241. See also pages 348, 395, 397, 421, and vol. 6, p. 135.) The Jews are those who distorted the holy writings which were revealed to them (2,73; 3,72) and denied God's signs (3,63). Since they violated the covenant with their God (4,154), He cursed them (5,16) and they are forever the inheritors of hell (3,112). So how could Arafat abandon Jerusalem to the Jews?

Since the holiness of Jerusalem to Islam has always been, and still is no more than a politically motivated holiness, any Palestinian Arab politician would be putting his political head on the block should he give it up. Must Judaism and Christianity defer to myths related in Islamic texts or allegedly envisioned in Muhammad's dreams, long after Jerusalem was established as the ancient, real center of these two religions which preceded Islam?

In the year 1929, the Mufti of Jerusalem called on his followers to rally to the defence of the Haram al-Sharif – the Arabic name for the Temple Mount – from an attack by the city’s Jews. It is the place where, for centuries, the First and Second Temples stood, and so for Jews it the most sacred place on earth. It is also important to Christians as the setting for events described in the Bible. After the Islamic conquest of the region, it was where the al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock were built, and is considered one of the most holy of places to Muslims.
There was no threat to the site, on which many Jews will not set foot because of its sanctity, but the Mufti knew that that the Haram al-Sharif is such a powerful, unifying symbol that any perceived danger to it would rouse his followers to violence. Even then he had quite a bit of expertise in inciting anti-Jewish riots, having done so in 1920 and 1921. In 1929 the hoax achieved the desired effect and, after six days of rioting in several locations, many had been injured and 243 had died, including 100 Arabs...
Back in 1929, Great Britain was governing a territory they called Palestine, putting back on the map a name from history, just as they then referred to Iraq as Mesopotamia. They were doing so, not as colonizers, but in order to carry out the will of the League of Nations –the body representing the world community in those days – that a Jewish state should arise there.
It was concept at first championed by Britain in its Balfour Declaration of 1917, but by 1929 London had shifted its position to what it considered even-handedness towards the Jewish and Arab communities. In practice that meant abandoning their responsibility to assist the Jews in nation-building, including by limiting Jewish (but not Arab) immigration. For the local British administration, even-handedness somehow meant actually encouraging the Arabs to commit anti-Jewish violence. The League of Nations / United Nations Mandate ended in 1948 and, against all the odds, the State of Israel declared its independence, although it didn’t get control of the entire area set aside by the League until 1967. That was all long ago, but what goes on at the UN today – and among many of its members – nevertheless reveals a sense of being entitled to rule on Israel’s every action, to the point of determining the right of the country – and only that particular country – to exist.
Just as once the British saw themselves as even-handed referees, today there is a new fairness doctrine. Under its rules, Israel – an open, democratic, peace-loving nation – is no better than a totalitarian, death-worshipping regime; in defending itself it is no more in the right than the aggressors; and in endangering its own people to protect the enemy’s non-combatants, it is equivalent to those who intentionally kill and maim. Israel’s enemies are never allowed to lose the wars they start. None of their territory is considered permanently forfeited, and all the damage they incur must be “proportional” to what they can inflict, with the bill for the repairs paid by someone else.
And if the media, most of which covered the recent round of fighting by adopting the narrative of Israel’s enemies – “Hamas’s truth,” if such an oxymoron is possible – it hasn’t much different over the decades. One foreign correspondent who was an exception to that pattern, who chose to sought out the facts and reported events truthfully, was the Dutch-born Canadian journalist Pierre Van Paassen.
Van Paassen was in Jerusalem in 1929, when the mob rampaged through the city, attacking any Jew they happened to encounter. He wrote that they screamed not only “Death to the Jews,” but also “The government is with us.” The British administration was indeed with the Arabs, refusing to allow the Jews to arm themselves until – because there was no else to stop the mob from attacking the government headquarters – they finally distributed guns to them. “A few shots fired into the air dispersed the bloodthirsty mob,” he wrote. “The Jews alone had saved British prestige in the Holy Land and in the entire Near East.”
When riots spread to other locations, van Paassen headed to Hebron, arriving soon after the violence had subsided. He discovered that doctored photos depicting the Haram al-Sharif apparently in ruins had been distributed in order to incite Friday worshippers, with labels falsely claiming the holy site had “been bombed by the Zionists.” For six days, with the police absent, mobs of Arabs had attacked their Jewish neighbours, killing 67 of them in what became known as the Hebron Massacre.
Van Paassen entered the house of a rabbi, where some of the Jews had sought protection. “We found the twelve-foot-high ceiling splashed with blood. The rooms looked like a slaughterhouse…The blood stood in a huge pool on the slightly sagging stone floor of the house.” Smashed personal possessions lay strewn about, along with severed body parts. Although the authorities prevented him from collecting the body parts as evidence, he was still able to provide the world with a first-hand description of what had happened.
While in Jerusalem, Van Paassen managed to obtain an interview with the Mufti himself, Muhammad Amin al-Husseini, the chief instigator of the 1929 riots. The same man had been behind the riots of 1920 (with the encouragement of some British officers) and in 1921; he would go on to foment killing on an even greater scale, particularly during the Arab Revolt of 1936-39. In 1920, the violence had been timed to take place just before the San Remo Conference, where the First World War allies would finalize the division of the territories surrendered by the Ottoman Turks. The allies, with the endorsement of the League of Nations, would create a series of “mandates,” new proto-nations that would take the place of the defunct 400-year-old empire.
Those mandates included Syria, Lebanon, Iraq – today failed states all. Another was Israel, which was to inherit “Palestine,” which originally accounted for four per cent of the Ottoman territories. After the British took the lion’s share of the Palestine Mandate to form what is now Jordan, the Jews were left with only one per cent – and they’re still fighting to hold on to that. The Mufti was very clear with van Paassen that he would never tolerate any kind of Jewish state, no matter how small: “There will be no peace until they go,” Husseini told him, “The British will have to put a soldier with a bayonet in front of every Jewish home if they want peace without a wholesale exodus of Jews. Our people are at the end of their patience. They cannot bear the sight of the Jews any longer.” Taking the journalist to a window in his chambers, the Mufti indicated the Muslim holy places: “That is the sanctuary the Jews want to tear down. Here they plan to rebuild the Temple of Solomon.”...
From Palestine, van Paassen travelled to Egypt, where he discovered that the pogroms in Jerusalem were being presented not as Arab attacks on Jews but as the opposite. There were “tens of thousands of forged photographs showing the Mosque of Omar (sic) in Jerusalem a pile of blackened ruins,” he later wrote. “The inscription on these pictures brazenly announced that the holiest shrine in Islam had been bombed to pieces by the Jews. Pamphlets also had been scattered setting forth in detail… (a) plan to rebuild the Hebrew Temple on the site.” There were photographs displaying an image from Hebron Massacre, the bodies of murdered rabbinical students lying in the foreground, but with a caption claiming they were slain Arabs.
While in Cairo, van Paassen managed to obtain an interview with the head of Al-Azhar University, the foremost place of learning in the Muslim world.
He later recalled his thoughts as he anticipated the interview: “One would have expected Cairo, capital city of the most progressive Arab state, to be the logical fountainhead of Pan-Arabism.” Surely this eminent Sunni leader would believe the “official” version of the events in Jerusalem, in which his fellow Muslims were the victims and the Jews were intent on destroying the holy places. So Van Paassen must have been taken aback by what the “Sheik-President” of Al-Azhar said to him:
“We know perfectly well that the Jews have no designs on the mosque, but they have very different ambitions in Palestine. That is a legitimate aspiration. We, too, here in Egypt want to rebuild an Egyptian culture. We are Egyptians first. We have nothing in common with Pan-Arabism. Its aims are absolutely outside the sphere of our national interests.”
Van Paassen asked the Al-Azhar president – he is unnamed in the journalist’s account – what he thought of the Grand Mufti. The laughing reply was that “there were no ‘grand’ muftis or ‘eminences’ in Islam.” At one point, van Paassen recalled, “The Sheik jumped to his feet. In 1922, al-Husseini was appointed Grand Mufti of Jerusalem by the British. He organized a reign of terror against moderate Moslems who showed any sign of accepting the Jews, and in 1929 organized further pogroms agianst Jews in Jerusalem, Motza, Hebron, Safed, Haifa, Tel Aviv and Jaffa, as well as Jews living in the countryside. The ancient Jewish community of Hebron was destroyed. After the massacre of the Hebron Jews, al-Husseini disseminated photos of the slaughtered Jewish corpses with the (false) claim that the dead where actaully Arabs killed by Jews!
This type of blood-libel is today frequently used against Israel by the Palestinian Authority together with the Axis of the Islamists and the International Left , and is widely dissmeninated in the media and universities worldwide. As Morse points out: "The preposterous and quite bizzare proposition prsented today is that the State of Israel and it's armed forces are deliberately and knowingly killing innocent Palestinian Arabs. I photographed the lesser-known document during a recent visit to New York to my friend Haim Steinberger, who has a large collection of maps of the Land of Israel (see below). Haim presented me with a Jordanian tourism map of Jerusalem drawn in 1965, two years before the Six Day War, when East Jerusalem was completely illegally occupied by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, without the world shouting or even whispering a word against this illegal occupation. The map was drawn by a Jordanian named 'Abd al-Rahman Ratzatz who worked as an official surveyor, and received approval from the official tourism authority of the Jordanian government. It can therefore be said that this is an official Jordanian map.
A look at the map shows that in 1965 the Temple Mount compound was still called 'Al-Haram al-Sharif', and it is located on "Mount Moriah" - the site of the Temple, the drinking stone, etc. Al-Aqsa Mosque, on the other hand, is just the building to the south of the compound. That is, almost thirty years before the peace treaty between Jordan and Israel, the kingdom saw the al-Aqsa Mosque only in a building located in southern al-Haram al-Sharif, built entirely on Mount Moriah.
It was only after the Jews liberated their temple site during the Six Day War in June 1967 that the rays of Islam decided to expand the Al-Aqsa Mosque - originally in the Saudi desert - from the building south of the Temple Mount to the entire Temple Mount, lest the Jews build a synagogue on the mountain, as the aspirations of Rabbis Goren and Shear-Yashuv-Cohen. - ↑ Yoseph Haddad @YosephHaddad Tweeted (Apr 11, 2022):

Analysis: Police believes hundreds of Palestinian youths who have been clashing with forces are funded by the PA, local contributions and Turkey, who want Hamas to join the fight for al Aqsa by firing rockets into Israel
The violent clashes on Temple Mount that broke out last Friday and resumed on Sunday, did not break out spontaneously.
The scope of violence required means and advanced preparation, which are the result of daily efforts by some Palestinians.
The rioters on Sunday, were told to remain inside the al-Aqsa mosque, by activists in order to engage with the police.
Calls on loud speakers urge Palestinian youth to stay and 'protect the Muslim holy sight' claiming it was under threat from Jews, as the instigators called on the Hamas rulers of Gaza, to join in the defense of the mosques by launching rocket fire on Israel.
Police officials said on Sunday, that ahead of the visit of non-Muslims on Temple Mount, hundreds of Palestinian youth began accumulating stones and other objects and set up makeshift barrier to be used in the intended clashes.
Police forces are working to remove the barriers and the stones from the site in order to ensure the safety of visitors," the police said.
"We intend to enable visits to Temple Mount and the freedom of worship for all faiths," the force said in a statement.
Jerusalem Mufti, Mohammed al-Husseini the Sunni Muslim cleric in charge of Jerusalem's Islamic holy places, his deputy, the chairman of the Supreme Muslim Council, and the director of the al- Aqsa mosque are all charged with the management of the site.
Some among them are regarded by Israeli security officials as dominant forces behind the violence, Although the Waqf refrains from participation in the violence.
The Waqf officials condemned the police actions and their silence on the rioting, was seen as a tacit agreement to the violence.
The protesting youth, police sources said, calling themselves, the gang of al-Aqsa, are mostly residents of east Jerusalem. They are affiliated with various religious political factions including followers of the Hamas terror group. Their numbers are in the hundreds and their motivation to clash with Israeli forces, is high.
According to sources, the youth who have been rioting, are led by a 43-year old resident of the city, Nihad Zreiyer who is close to the Fatah faction.
The group, the sources said is funded by the Palestinian Authority, contribution of local residents as well as funds sent from Turkey.
The group used fire crackers, stones and other objects that were hurled at the police. Those were smuggled into the mosque compound over days in advance, and prepared in several locations.

Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was interviewed on Wednesday by Christiane Amanpour of CNN and grilled on the latest wave of violence and its implications for his and his government's political future. Asked to explain why he allowed IDF soldiers to enter the Al Aqsa Mosque, given the fact that the footage is then broadcast over the world and inflames tensions, Bennett replied, "As usual, you're starting in the middle of the story.
"Last Friday, 300 Palestinians barricaded themselves on the Temple Mount, preventing other Muslims from praying," Bennett continued, as Amanpour grimaced. "My responsibility is to ensure freedom of religion for everyone, and that's why I was obligated to send in police officers ... enabling 80 thousand Muslims to pray there peacefully afterward... "I object to the notion of 'both sides.' When they don't attack us, we have no issue with them. But when they do attack us, I have to fight back and hit them at their terror bases. That's what any leader would do and that's what I'm doing."

The world instinctively blamed Israel for the violence at the Temple Mount this past weekend, ignoring almost entirely the facts of the events as they unfolded and Israel’s stated and demonstrated commitment to maintaining the status quo. It was no surprise that Muslim nations were among the loudest to condemn Israel, though it was a bit disconcerting to find our new Abraham Accords allies among them. But that same day the United Arab Emirates also agreed to take part in Israel’s upcoming Independence Day celebrations, showing that we can disagree and still remain friends. The most shocking reaction to the Temple Mount flare-up came from one of Israel’s oldest peace partners in the Middle East, neighboring Jordan. Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher Khasawneh went so far as to openly praise the Palestinian Muslims who had engaged in violence against Israeli police and civilians.
“I salute every Palestinian, and all the employees of the Jordanian Islamic Waqf, who proudly stand like minarets, hurling their stones in a volley of clay at the Zionist sympathizers defiling the Al-Aqsa Mosque under the protection of the Israeli occupation government,” Khasawneh told the Jordanian parliament.
Israel Prime Minister Naftali Bennett called this incitement, though refrained from pointing a finger directly at Jordan or Khasawneh. In a short video clip posted online, Bennett slammed those who “accuse Israel of the violence directed against us…those who are encouraging rock-throwing and the use of violence against the citizens of the State of Israel.”
“This is unacceptable to us,” he added. “This is a reward for the inciters, especially Hamas, who are trying to ignite violence in Jerusalem. We will not allow this to happen.”
Bennett stressed that Israel is committed to security and freedom of worship for all local residents, Muslims included, all of whom are harmed by the actions of the rioters. And that was the point Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem Fleur Hassan-Nahoum had to reinforce when she was interviewed by a BBC journalist who had simply copy-pasted Hamas accusations as his talking points.
Suggesting that the Israeli police action had been entirely arbitrary, the BBC anchor asked: “Why did Israeli police storm the Aqsa compound at a sensitive time, during Friday prayers, during Ramadan?” Hassan-Nahoum was having none of it: “Actually, the question is why did rioters come early in the morning with stones and fireworks and start throwing stones from the Temple Mount, from Haram al-Sharif, to the Wailing Wall? They showed up this morning to cause trouble.” Indeed, ample social media evidence shows Muslim youth arriving early and stockpiling stones inside Al-Aqsa Mosque before engaging the Israelis. Several clips also show older Muslim worshippers berating the youngsters and demanding that they stop disrupting Ramadan by attacking Israelis. Hassan-Nahoum echoed Bennett in stating that the action of the Israeli police was aimed at restoring calm so that the majority of Muslims who arrived to the Temple Mount could enjoy [their] Ramadan.
“Israel protects freedom of worship above anything else and that’s whywe needed to get rid of the troublemakers so that the rest of the peaceful Muslim pilgrims could come and pray as they normally do every single Friday,” she stressed. And that’s just what the rest of the Muslims did, unmolested by Israeli police, once the rioters had been forcibly ejected. That wasn’t good enough for the BBC anchor, who persisted in his assertion that Israel’s actions had been disproportionate and provocative. And that’s when Hassan-Nahoum sounded like she’d had enough and sought to set the record straight:
“Let me tell you something. I am the head of tourism for the city of Jerusalem, and I consider Haram al-Sharif holy to Jews and holy to Muslims. And we are so sensitive [to Muslim concerns] that by Israeli law Jews aren’t allowed to go and pray at Haram al-Sharif. There is freedom of worship for everybody in this city except for Jews who want to pray on the Temple Mount.
