The United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit presides over Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. It handles appeals from federal district courts in those states.

The Seventh Circuit long had several prolific judges who are former professors at the University of Chicago, where they embraced a free market economic philosophy. It is the Circuit where Judge Amy Coney Barrett presides. Judge Frank Easterbrook has also long presided on the Seventh Circuit, and is known for his colorful, sometimes acerbic writing style.

As of July 2018, nine out of eleven active judges on the Seventh Circuit are Republican nominees, including four judges nominated by President Donald Trump and confirmed by the Senate.
