To clarify, ISIS stands for "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria"; ISIL stands for "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (this is the technically more correct term, since the Levant refers to Syria and Lebanon, and ISIS had territory in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.)  "Daesh" is a well-earned insult against them, but many native English speakers have a hard time pronouncing the word ''Daesh''.  ISIS/ISIL/Daesh prefers to be called "The Islamic State" because statehood gives them (undeserved) respectability.

Point being, I would argue ISIL is the most accurate term to describe this terrorist group for the reasons above.  What is the current consensus?

Most of the media is still calling this group "ISIS". See Fox News. or Wall Street Journal The name "Islamic State" is confusingly similar to "Islamic state," i.e. the generic concept of a state based on Islam. PeterKa 09:59, 6 August 2014 (EDT)

But the correct new name is Islamic State.--JoeyJ 10:16, 6 August 2014 (EDT)
The name is how a subject is commonly referred to. If the publications everyone reads are calling it by a particular term, that's the "correct name." AP is calling it "the Islamic State group," although I don't think that's likely to catch on. PeterKa 20:03, 6 August 2014 (EDT)
Many publications like Al Jazeera, Washington Post or BBC call it also Islamic State. --JoeyJ 05:54, 7 August 2014 (EDT)
The name "Islamic State" adds tacit legitimization, and the US State Department officially refers to them as ISIL. At least one non-English nation, as well as the Arabic enemies of ISIL, refer to them as "DAESH," a loose acronym from Arabic (the name is al-Dawla al-Islamiya al-Iraq al-Sham) which is also close to the Arabic words "Daes" and "Dahes," meaning "one who crushes something underfoot," and "one who sows discord," respectively. For sure?

However this claim seems unlikely, because the Islamic State was only founded to fight the U.S.? How could we be sure? Could be an undercover lie as many in the past; like the nuclear weapons of Saddam. What is clear are the evidences like the stolen oil that are transported every day with total impunity. --Joaquín Martínez 19:08, 12 June 2015 (EDT)

Munich

While I think you are correct to remove the attack JoeyJ but I am not sure it was not related to ISIS. [4] ISIS has called for lone wolf attacks and praised the body count yet has not taken credit like they normally do. German officials are eager not to share details as well. There is not a single note that confirms that the attack was commited by the Islamic State. It is not even known whether the assassin was a muslim. The investigation has resulted that the shooting was a rampage and not a terrorist attack. --JoeyJ (talk) 13:30, 22 October 2016 (EDT)

ISIS vs ISIL vs Daesh vs Islamic State

To clarify, ISIS stands for "Islamic State of Iraq and Syria"; ISIL stands for "Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant" (this is the technically more correct term, since the Levant refers to Syria and Lebanon, and ISIS had territory in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.) "Daesh" is a well-earned insult against them, but many native English speakers have a hard time pronouncing the word Daesh. ISIS/ISIL/Daesh prefers to be called "The Islamic State" because statehood gives them (undeserved) respectability.

Point being, I would argue ISIL is the most accurate term to describe this terrorist group for the reasons above. What is the current consensus? IluvAviation (talk) 19:43, 27 March 2017 (EDT)
