Leif Erikson Day is a holiday annually held on October 9 in honor of the explorer, Leif Erikson. It is mostly celebrated by Americans and Canadians of Scandinavian descent. It is a popular holiday in states where Scandinavian influence is strong, such as Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, southern New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado, as well as provinces such as Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, where Scandinavian influence is also strong.
