It takes guts to demand that the citizens of a whole country wear a mask and a face shield.

On the other hand, southeast Asia is more authoritarian and communal than say Europe or the Anglosphere. In addition, Catholic countries are probably more authoritarian than Protestant countries (Catholics have a pope, etc. etc.). The Philippines is a Catholic country in southeast Asia. Here's the thing. The President of the Philippines is in charge. Trump at that time was in charge. Trump hosted rally after rally without social distancing or wearing masks whilst mocking those who did. Trump told Fauci not to recommend mask wearing. Had Trump taken the pandemic seriously the US death toll would have been halved. Trump did take the pandemic seriously by promoting HCQ, which works when taken ASAP along with zinc and azithromycin. Donald Trump played a part in America's successes and failures during the coronavirus pandemic.

But Trump wasn't solely in charge because the United States has federalism where the 50 states have rights/responsibilities too. For example, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was responsible for Covid-19 patients going into nursing homes and spreading coronavirus to the other patients, whereas Florida Governor Ron DeSantis helped protect nursing home patients by restricting Covid-19 patients from being allowed into nursing homes.

The 50 states had wide divergences in terms of Covid-19 deaths per capita based on their population densities in their various geographic regions, their demographics and the quality of their political leadership. Conservative (talk) 18:27, 17 May 2021 (EDT)

That's a good point to bring up. Due to states' rights in the U.S., Trump couldn't outright stop the disastrous policies of blue states ruled practically by dictators.
