Creation refers to either that which has been created, e.g. Mark 16:15, “Preach the Gospel to the whole creation,” or to the moment or process by which God created, e.g. Genesis is the creation account. This article deals with the second meaning.
Different groups have different views on creation. Young Earth creationists take the Genesis creation account literally and believe that over six 24-hour days, God separately created each different aspect of creation mentioned (Earth, sun and moon, plants, etc.). They also consider the list of patriarchs in the Bible to be generally accurate, without missing lists or gaps, and so they consider the earth to be 6000 years old, thus “Young Earth.”
Old Earth creationists may believe in the separate creation of each creature (their views are more varied), but also take the creation week as non-literal and embrace the idea of a billions-of-years-old earth (Old Earth). They include "progressive creationists", who reject evolution and instead believe that God progressively created over the millions of years believed by evolutionists.
Theistic evolutionists accept an old Earth and believe that evolution occurred, but that it was God’s means of creation.
Atheistic evolutionists attribute evolution to chance, natural selection, and survival of the fittest, believe in an old Earth, and avidly reject a young Earth model.
