The technique goes at least as far back as 19th century Europe, and was perfected in the USA by Walt Disney. Adding sound to animation greatly increased the market for animation. Disney's "Steamboat Willie" is a classic example, followed by his "Silly Symphonies". Not to be outdone, Warner Brothers created their Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies.
The world's most famous animated cartoon character is Disney's Mickey Mouse. Chuck Jones's Bugs Bunny is an American favorite.

Most American animation is geared toward children. Japanese animation, on the other hand, in addition to having animation which caters to children, also has animations which address serious topics like war or politics.[1]
