We is a novel written in 1920 by Yevgeny Zamyatin. It is considered the first major dystopian novel[1] as well as an influence on both Brave New World and Anthem. George Orwell believed that We was a stronger novel than Brave New World because while the Brave New World shows an ultimately pointless society, the We shows an "intuitive grasp of the irrational side of totalitarianism."[2] However, both Brave New World and We share the following strength: the insight that unfree societies tend to use sexual "freedom" to make their subjects forget that they do not enjoy true freedom, a practice seen in just about every real-world tyranny.
