Richard Dawkins is dismissive of the concept of Islamophobia and declared: "I’m always being accused of Islamophobia, that’s a non-word."[1]

The number of atheists is growing in Islamic countries, but statistics on the number of atheists is hazy due due to the fact that atheists are very often closet atheists in Islamic countries.[2]

Islam is the second largest religious belief in Europe after Christianity. From a global perspective, Europe is more secular/atheistic than most areas of the the rest of the world (See: Global atheism).

Europe has a considerable amount of religious immigrants who have higher birth rates than the general population of Europeans (see: Desecularization of Europe).[3] Many immigrants to Europe are from Islamic countries and there is now a significant amount of Europeans who oppose Muslim immigration. The Independent reported in 2017 "An average of 55 per cent of people across the 10 European countries surveyed wanted to stop all future immigration from mainly Muslim countries."[4]

The current atheist population mostly resides in East Asia (particularly China) and in secular Europe/Australia primarily among whites (See: Western atheism and race).[5]

Due to the growing number of Muslims moving into secular Europe/Western World and the ideological differences between the atheist worldview and the Islamic religion, there has been growing tension between atheists/secularists and Muslims - particularly between militant atheists and militant Islamacists.

The New Atheists Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris and the late Christopher Hitchens have received multiple accusations of engaging in Islamophobic behavior.[6] Dawkins is dismissive of the concept of Islamophobia and declared: "I’m always being accused of Islamophobia, that’s a non-word."[7] See also: Richard Dawkins and Islamophobia accusations and New Atheism and Islamophobia

On the other hand, defenders of atheist criticisms of Islam/Muslims indicated that New Atheists should be able to criticize Islam without being accused of Islamophobia.[8]

Christopher Hitchens displayed provocative rhetoric and bloodlust towards radical Islamacists.[9] At the opening of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, Hitchens said of radical Islamacists, "It is a pleasure and a duty to kill these people".[10] Hitchens said of Islamic Iran, which engages in state-sponsored terrorism, "As for that benighted country, I wouldn't shed a tear if it was wiped off the face of this earth”.[11]

Future of Islam in Europe and the desecularization of Europe

According to Pew Forum, by 2030 Muslims are projected to make up 8% of Europe’s population.[12]

According to Pew Forum:

“ In recent decades, the Muslim share of the population throughout Europe grew about 1 percentage point a decade, from 4% in 1990 to 6% in 2010. This pattern is expected to continue through 2030, when Muslims are projected to make up 8% of Europe’s population.[13] ”

Professor Philip Jenkins at Penn State University projects that by 2100, Muslims will be about 25% of Europe's population. Jenkins indicates that this figure does not take account divergent birthrates amongst Europe's various immigrant Christians.[14]

In April 2010, Eric Kaufmann indicated concerning the future of Islam in Europe:

“ I address this in some detail in the book, as well is in a recent article in the April issue of Prospect magazine here in Britain. The short answer is that I don’t foresee a Muslim-majority Europe in this century or in the next. Why? Mainly because Muslim birthrates are plunging both in Europe and the Muslim world. Already, Iran, Tunisia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and several other Muslim countries have replacement-level fertility or below. In the UK, Bangladeshi and Pakistani fertility has halved in a generation and is now under 3 children per woman. This means their long-term growth will begin to tail off. The other part of the equation is the rise of non-Muslim immigrant groups (African and West Indian Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and other Eastern faiths) who are also increasing and therefore making Europe more plural and, in the process, rendering it harder for Muslims to increase their share of the population.

That said, Muslim membership retention and in-group marriage is exceptionally high (over 90 per cent) and they are a much younger population than the host society. So they are on course for steady growth. My colleagues and I expect their fertility to fall to host levels by 2030, but they will still make up 5-15 per cent of most West European countries by 2050 and 10-25 per cent by 2100. This is a major change from the 2-6 per cent levels of today[15]

Investor's Business Daily on the flood of Muslim immigrants to Europe

Investor's Business Daily wrote in 2015 concerning a flood of Muslim immigrants to the European Union:

“ The European Union is bracing for as many as 800,000 mostly Muslim refugees arriving from the chaos in the Middle East this year, mainly Syria, Iraq and Eritrea.

And it may be just the beginning. Can the EU withstand such a religio-demographic earthquake? Its failure to enforce any concept of borders isn't a good sign....

Assimilation offers little hope. Parts of France — especially its notorious banlieues outside major cities like Paris — are virtual no-go zones. London's are little better. Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavia all have large, unassimilated Muslim populations.

Those populations are growing. Europe isn't. As far back as 2011, the Pew Forum noted that Europe's Muslim population was expected to almost double from 30 million in 1990 to 57 million in 2030.

That's surely now an underestimate. Add to this the inevitability of jihadists slipping across porous EU borders, and Europe is in deep trouble.

Anger is welling up, and nationalist parties are spreading across the Continent. As 20th century history showed, Europe doesn't react well to social upheaval.

Can Europe survive the coming storm? Doubtful.[16]

“ Adding the 800,000 Muslim migrants who arrived in Germany in 2015, and the 240,000 who arrived in 2016, combined with the 77,000 natural increase, the Muslim population of Germany jumped by 1,117,000, to reach an estimated 6,262,000 by the end of 2016. This amounts to approximately 7.5% of Germany's overall population of 82 million.[19] ”

Given Europe's violence in the past and its economic problems, it is argued that anti-Muslim violence will increase and that an expulsion of Muslims from various European countries may occur.[25][26] In 2015, Spanish police were accused of breaking international law by beating African migrants who climbed border fences and deporting them on the spot without asylum procedures.[27]

In 2014, the Washington Post reported:

“ The month of Ramadan should have been a time of fasting, charity and prayer in China’s Muslim west. But here, in many of the towns and villages of southern Xinjiang, it was a time of fear, repression, and violence.

China’s campaign against separatism and terrorism in its mainly Muslim west has now become an all-out war on conservative Islam, residents here say.

Throughout Ramadan,police intensified a campaign of house-to-house searches, looking for books or clothing that betray “conservative” religious belief among the region’s ethnic Uighurs: women wearing veils were widely detained, and many young men arrested on the slightest pretext, residents say. Students and civil servants were forced to eat instead of fasting, and work or attend classes instead of attending Friday prayers.

The religious repression has bred resentment, and, at times, deadly protests.[32]

In 2010, the Islamic creationist Harun Yahya was chosen among the top 500 most influential Muslims by the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies center in Jordan.[36]

Michael Reiss, who is a professor of education at the Institute of Education in London and an Anglican priest, said the evolution-creationism debate could no longer be thought of as something that happened elsewhere and that more and more people in the UK did not accept evolution.

Reiss told the Guardian that countries with a higher proportion of Muslims or fundamentalist Christians in their population were more likely to reject evolution. In London, where I work, there are increasingly quite large numbers of highly intelligent 16, 17 and 18-year-olds doing Advanced Level biology who do not accept evolution. France has the 8th highest rate of atheism in the world with 43 - 54% of the population being atheists/agnostics/non-believers in God.[42]

A USA Today column of the Paris attack declared:

“ Which should tell you all we need to know about "why France?" Clearly there is no place in civilized society to blame the victims. But there may be some real reasons why France—and not Britain (which is flying way more sorties over Syrian and Iraqi territories held by IS), or Germany or especially the United States. A lot of it is a lingering perception of France as a soft target.[48] ”
Charlie Hebdo incident

Specifically, in November 2011, the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo were fire-bombed by Muslim jihad terrorists and their website was hacked. On the 7th of January 2015, in the liberal gun free zone of Paris, three extremist Islamic terrorist French-born males armed with fully-automatic AK-47s murdered, execution-style, 10 of the staff and 2 policeman and wounded ten other people. Well known socialist cartoonists Charb, Cabu, Honoré, Tignous and Wolinski were all killed.[49]

Denmark terrorist incident at meeting entitled Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Speech

In 2005, Denmark was ranked the third most atheistic country in the world and the website adherents.com reported that in 2005 43 - 80% of Danes are agnostics/atheists/non-believers in God.[50] Denmark has the highest rate of belief in evolution in the Western World.[51]

In February 2015, Vox Day reported:

“ A man, aged 40, has died after masked gunmen opened fire on the Krudttoenden cafe in Copenhagen during a meeting entitled Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Speech. Two people were taken away on stretchers after the attack after the cafe was sprayed with 200 bullets. The French ambassador, who was present at the debate on free speech, has said it was an attempt at a Charlie Hebdo-style attack in the Danish capital.

200 shots and one kill? It certainly sounds like jihad.[52]

String of atheist and secularist bloggers killed by Islamic extremists in Bangladesh

A number of atheist and secularist bloggers were murdered or seriously injured by Islamic militants in Bangladesh as of early 2013. Notable incidents included the attacks of Ahmed Rajib Haider (murdered)[55], Asif Mohiuddin (survived)[56], Sunnyur Rahaman (survived)[57], Shafiul Islam (murdered)[58], Avijit Roy (murdered)[59], Oyasiqur Rhaman (murdured)[60], Ananta Bijoy Das (murdured)[61], Niloy Chatterjee (murdured)[62], Faisal Arefin Dipan (murdured), Ranadeep Basu, Tareque Rahim,[63] and Ahmedur Rashid Chowdhury (murdured).[64] Many of the bloggers were active in the Shahbag movement, which demanded the death penalty for war criminal Abdul Quader Mollah.

However, rape and the worst kinds of violence are religiously authorized in jihad war against declared out-groups. Punishment for rape can be severe if the victim is a protected family member. But infidel women are free for all. That is what ISIS is telling the world, in Iraq and Syria...

Now, next door to Sweden, Norway recently expelled almost a thousand Muslim immigrants for serious crimes, and behold! The violent crime rate dropped by 30% in Norway. Amazing but true.[70]

According to the University of Cambridge, historically, the "most notable spread of atheism was achieved through the success of the 1917 Russian Revolution, which brought the Marxist-Leninists to power."[73] Vitalij Lazarʹevič Ginzburg, a Soviet physicist, wrote that the "Bolshevik communists were not merely atheists but, according to Lenin's terminology, militant atheists."[74] However, prior to this, the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution established an atheist state, with the official ideology being the Cult of Reason; during this time thousands of believers were suppressed and executed by the guillotine.[75]

It is estimated that in the past 100 years, governments under the banner of atheistic communism have caused the death of somewhere between 40,472,000 to 259,432,000 human lives.[76] Dr. R. J. Rummel, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Hawaii, is the scholar who first coined the term democide (death by government). Dr. R. J. Rummel's mid estimate regarding the loss of life due to communism is that communism caused the death of approximately 110,286,000 people between 1917 and 1987.[77] See also: Atheism and mass murder

Today, atheist primarily spread their worldview through public school indoctrination, through the media and via the internet (see: Atheist indoctrination and Atheism and the media and Internet atheism).

Irreligion and domestic violence

Research suggests that irreligiousity is a causal factor for domestic violence.[78] See: Irreligion and domestic violence

The irreligious have a higher rate of domestic violence (See: Irreligion and domestic violence). In addition, some of Europe's most secular countries have significant problems with domestic violence (see: Secular Europe and domestic violence).

For example, Sweden is one of the most atheistic countries in the world.[79] In Sweden, 81 percent of women said they had been harassed at some point after the age of 15 - compared to the EU average of 55 percent.[80]

Research indicates that atheists are more likely to see illegal drug use and couple cohabitation before marriage as being morally acceptable.[81] A higher rate of domestic violence exists among cohabiting couples as compared with married couples[82] Atheists have lower marriage rates than theists (see: Atheism and marriage and Atheist marriages). According to the World Health Organization, "Interpersonal violence and illicit drug use are major public health challenges that are strongly linked."[83]

The irreligious prison population, according to government data of many sovereign states, as well as that of independent surveys, makes up a large percentage of the overall prisoner demographic. In the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, according to the 2011 Census, the irreligious make up only "around a quarter of the population."[84] However, they are over-represented in the prison population, forming over 34% of all criminals.[85][86] These statistics confirm recent scientific research, which has concluded that "the more involved people are with religious life, the less likely they are to fall into criminal behavior."[87]

There was little religious motivation for the internecine Russian and Chinese conflicts or the world wars responsible for history's most lethal century of international bloodshed.
Not only does Atran accept the argument I originally presented in a WND article before refining it in The Irrational Atheist, but his article is actually much less of a Fighting Withdrawal than the misleading subtitle - What we don't understand about religion just might kill us - would lead the casual reader to believe."[88]

In his book The Irrational Atheist, Vox Day wrote:

“ It’s also interesting to note that more than half of these religious wars, sixty-six in all, were waged by Islamic nations, which is rather more than might be statistically expected considering that the first war in which Islam was involved took place almost three millennia after the first war chronicled in the Encyclopedia, Akkad’s conquest of Sumer in 2325 B . C .

In light of this evidence, the fact that a specific religion is currently sparking a great deal of conflict around the globe cannot reasonably be used to indict all religious faith, especially when one considers that removing that single religion from the equation means that all of the other religious faiths combined only account for 3.35 percent of humanity’s wars.[89]

Islam and women

The Koran allows Muslim men to beat their wives and the Islamic religion is often less friendly to women than other religions/worldviews.[90][91] Muslim apologists who practice a less strict form of Islam often try to obscure/deny what the Koran declares about wife beating.[92]

Islamic countries and crime

In most cases, Muslim countries average 2.4 murders per annum per 100,000 people, compared to 7.5 in non-Muslim countries.[93]

Intolerance of militant atheism and militant Islam

David Silverman

The Christian Apologetic and Research Ministry wrote about the intolerance of militant atheism and militant Islam:

“ ...there is one thing that both the faith of atheism (yes, atheism is indeed a faith-based system) and Islam have in common: they aggressively do everything in their power to silence any voice that dares to challenge their ideology...

Sporting such a spirit, it is not surprising that hatetheists have no desire for any dialogue with others who do not share their opinions. A case in point is the first “Reason Rally,” which was held in Washington D.C. on March 24, 2012, with headliners like Richard Dawkins and other similar famous atheists being present.

When Tom Gilson, editor of the book True Reason, contacted David Silverman of American Atheists to inform them that Christians would be present at the Reason Rally and were interested in having a respectful dialogue with the atheist group with a formal debate between Dawkins and Christian apologist William Lane Craig also being proposed, he was told the following:

"Make no mistake – you are not welcomed guests at the rally. We are not going to DC for ‘dialogue’ with people who believe ridiculous things--we are going to have fun with other like-minded people. Those who proselytize or interfere with our legal and well-deserved enjoyment will be escorted to the 1st Amendment pen by security, which will be plentiful, where you can stand with the Westborough [sic] Baptists and shout yourselves hoarse.
Spreading out among the crowd is not a substitute for a permit. Indeed, I will be meeting with the Parks Commission on Thursday to discuss how to handle your infiltrative permitless counter-protest."

While Silverman and his group have no problem erecting billboards during times such as Christmas and Easter that mock Christianity and thus insert themselves into Christians’ holidays, it appears they have no desire to have Christians ‘intrude’ into their events.

So much for being ‘free thinkers.’[94]

Atheism vs. Islam debates

There have been few atheism vs. Islam debates.

Christopher Hitchens

Although Islam is a major religion with many adherents, in Islamic societies tolerance for atheists is rare.[95]

In the Western World, there have been a few notable public debates between atheists and Muslims, but there have not been many. The atheist Lawrence Krauss debated Muslim Hamza Tzortzis about the existence of God.[96] Also, the atheists Christopher Hitchens debated Muslim Tariq Ramadan and the debate topic was "Is Islam a religion of peace?".[97] As noted above, there have been incidences of Muslim extremists attacking critics of Islam in the Western World so many atheists may be reluctant to engage in high profile atheism vs. Islam debates.

When Muslim apologists debate atheists about the existence of God, they usually employ the Kalam cosmological argument which is an argument for the existence of God developed in the Islamic world.
