Analytical thinking

The problem solving process involves "defining the problem, generating solutions, evaluating options, and implementing a solution."[1]

Analytical thinking is the process of breaking down complex problems or information into smaller and/or more manageable parts to better understand them and to find more optimal solutions. It involves such processes as identifying patterns, cause and effect relationships and other relationships, and underlying principles to gain a deeper understanding of the whole problem. This process can be used to make informed decisions, better solve problems, and develop new ideas.[2]

To break down a problem into smaller parts for analytical thinking, start by clearly defining the problem, then break it down into its core components or subproblems, analyze each part, and finally, synthesize the solutions to create a comprehensive solution. Techniques such as the drill down technique, divide and conquer (Break the main problem into smaller, more manageable subproblems), and root cause analysis can be helpful.[3][4][5]

Aristotle is often called the father of logic in the West.

To think analytically, break down complex problems into smaller, manageable parts, then examine each individual part, looking for connections and patterns. This involves gathering relevant information, analyzing data, and forming logical and rational conclusions (See: Logical reasoning and Rational thinking). Sharpening analytical skills also involves practicing problem solving skills, asking questions, and being open to different perspectives.[10]

In terms of one's personal life, recording one day’s events via journaling, gives one the opportunity and time to reflect. When the day's events don’t turn out as planned, one can learn from these mistakes/events and take them into account for one's future actions. A large part of analyzing involves trial and error and experimentation. Keeping a journal to remind you of your past is an excellent way to sharpen your thinking and analytical skills in considering and planning your future.[11] Similarly, having daily/weekly/monthy/yearly goals and reflecting on one's progress and how one can improve one's progress can also be useful.

This simplifies the problem, making it easier to understand and address each component individually."[12] Decomposition, a key component of both analytical and computational thinking allows individuals to focused their attention on each part of the problem (subproblem) which makes the overall problem appear less daunting and easier to address.[13]

To break down a problem for analytical thinking, begin by clearly defining the problem (Define the problem so its unambiguous. Identify the root cause or causes. Determine the scope of the problem.) and then divide it into smaller, manageable parts. Analyze each component individually (Especially looking at key components of the problem and how the elements of the problem interact with each other and how much they contribute to the whole problem), considering its relationship to the whole problem, and then synthesize your findings to develop a comprehensive solution.[14]

Basic analytical thinking

Basic analytical thinking is arrived at by taking things apart via:[16][17]

1. Indentifying the problem/topic.

2. Observation (which may involve collecting/gathering information). Critically examines issues by breaking them down into manageable parts. See: Observation skills

4. Evaluation and drawing conclusions. Inference to the best explanation of the situation/results/cause or causes of the problem/solution(s)

5. Testing and post analysis of the decided upon solution/conclusion
