Richard Blumenthal (born February 13, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York) currently serves as the senior Democratic United States Senator from Connecticut, having defeated World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon in the race to replace retiring Chris Dodd. He was the lone freshman Democratic Senator in the 112th Congress. Previously Blumenthal served as the Attorney General of Connecticut for twenty years, and prior to that he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and State Senate.
Blumenthal is well known for lying over the course of many years that he fought in the Vietnam War, having received no less than five deferments.[1] Blumenthal is known for lecturing others on the importance of telling the truth despite shamelessly doing the opposite.[2]
In 2007, the libertarian-leaning Competitive Enterprise Institute ranked Blumenthal "the nation's worst state attorney general" and "a tireless crusader for growing the power of his own office and spreading largesse to his cronies."[3]
During the nationally televised Supreme Court confirmation hearings of Judge Brett Kavanaugh, Blumenthal demeaned an innocent classmate of Kavanaugh by name, and impugned her as a sexually promiscuous teenager 36 years later to attack Judge Kavanaugh.[4]
Blumenthal, Ed Markey, and Jeane Shaheen have accepted foreign campaign contributions from Burisma oil and gas and voted to give money Ukraine.[5]
According to National Journal, Blumenthal is one of the two most liberal Senators.[6]
