What I have written
My time at Wikipedia
Back in 2012, I was a senior editor on Wikipedia and could boast tens of thousands of edits as well as a clean eight-year track record. I spent much of my time in a forum called "requested moves." There I promoted the use of conventional English in titles, and opposed unnecessary reliance on foreign languages. (Wikipedia has a lot of editors from Europe who are partial to non-English terminology and spellings.) I was eventually blocked over an article I wrote about Sino-Vietnamese characters. This is a highly obscure subject. I am pretty sure the article would not have been remotely controversial if anyone else wrote it. The idea was to get me out of the way so a banning discussion could be held without my interference. This discussion was full of people I'd never heard of up to that point, and none of them bothered to explain why they would care about my case. Someone must have canvassed them together. The article that triggered the discussion is barely mentioned. In other words, something else was going on.
The over-the-top reaction against me makes sense only if someone lost money. If anyone wants to get to the bottom of Wikipedia corruption, I suggest investigating the French embassy as a possible source of payola. My crime against France was to lead a successful effort to move an African country from it's French name (Côte d'Ivoire) to it's English name (Ivory Coast). This was in June 2012, just before the offensive against me was launched.
