Samuel Nelson (November 10, 1792 – December 13, 1873) was an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was appointed to the Court by President John Tyler after the Senate had rejected Tyler's two prior nominees.[1] Nelson wrote the original opinion in the Dred Scott v. Sanford - where he avoided the question of slavery, but pressure from Southern justices scrapped his opinion and replaced it with Chief Justice Roger Taney's more inflammatory one.[2]
