The San Francisco 49ers are a National Football League (NFL) team based in Santa Clara, California. They are members of the National Football Conference (NFC) West Division.

History and League Title Success

The 49ers were members of the All-America Football Conference all four of its years (1946-1949); when the league folded the 49ers (along with the Cleveland Browns and a team called the Baltimore Colts, no relation to the later franchise of the same name which is now the Indianapolis Colts) joined the NFL.

The 49ers were not very successful in their early years, but in the 1980's and early 1990's they were the league's dominant team, winning all five of its Super Bowl appearances during that time (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1994). Since then they have made only two other appearances in the Super Bowl (2012 and 2019), losing both times. The seven Super Bowl appearances are the third-most among NFL franchises; their five wins ties them for second most with the Dallas Cowboys.
