A pie chart delineating the percentage of atheists in prison (shown in blue) in the United Kingdom; data courtesy of The National Archives (UK)

In the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, according to the 2011 Census, atheists make up only "around a quarter of the population."[1] However, they are over-represented in the prison population, forming over 30% of all criminals.[2][3] These statistics confirm recent scientific research, which have concluded that "the more involved people are with religious life, the less likely they are to fall into criminal behavior."[4]
