Curium, discovered in 1944 is an artificial radioactive element,[1] that was predicted would have a revolutionary impact on power generation, since it undergoes radioactive decay, giving out large amounts of energy if it is bombarded with plutoninium dust. However, the risk of spontateous radioactive release was deemed too great.[2] A compound of curium and neutrons is know seen as a potential fuel for nuclear fusion.[3]
