Les Miserables is a French novel supposedly based on history which was written by Victor Hugo and first published in 1862. Liberals are big promoters of this novel due to its political message, and it has been repeatedly made in movies, television series, and a Broadway musical who has broken records for popularity.
The novel sides with the poor as they commit crimes and are ostracized for it, and its message includes opposition to capital punishment. Hugo himself was politically active against the death penalty, and gave speeches against it when he was in the French legislature.
Les Miserables is an emotional tale that has inspired class warfare ever since.
