Shelley Moore Capito (born November 26, 1953) is the junior Republican United States Senator for her native West Virginia who was elected in 2014. She serves alongside the better-known Democrat Joe Manchin.

Capito received 62 percent of the vote on Election Day, while her Democrat opponent received 34 percent.[1]

She joined the West Virginia delegation to Congress with a Democratic senator and three Republican representatives.

Despite voting in 2015 to repeal ObamaCare, when it was known the bill would be vetoed by Obama,[2] Capito opposed repealing the law after Donald Trump became U.S. President and repealing the law became a real possibility.[3]

Background

Capito served in the West Virginia House of Delegates for four years before being elected to national office as the representative for West Virginia's 2nd district (Jan. 2001-Jan. 2015).[4]

She is the daughter of Arch A. Moore, Jr., who served as the governor of West Virginia for three terms.
