George Wilcken Romney (July 8, 1907 – July 26, 1995) was a successful U.S. businessman, having chaired the American Motors Corporation. He was the 43rd Governor of Michigan from 1963-1969 and served as U.S. Secretary of Housing and Urban Development under President Richard Nixon from 1969–1973. Romney was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in 1968.
As governor he sanctioned a personal and corporate income tax and promoted civil rights legislation. A Rockefeller Republican who in many ways resembled his son Mitt Romney, he dramatically expanded government spending from his predecessor. Upon leaving public life he founded the National Center for Voluntary Activity.
