The Survival Blog is the most popular Preparedness website on the Internet with more than 80 million unique visits since July 2005. It claims, "Since its launch in 2005, SurvivalBlog has been the Internet’s most popular daily blog on survival and preparedness topics."[1] It is ranked as the fourth most popular survivalist blog based on its Alexa rating of 83,885.[2]

It has the tag line of: "The Web Log for Prepared Individuals Living in Uncertain Times." SurvivalBlog has created a virtual "patriot prepper" community of people in a wide variety of disciplines, which is not unexpectedly from a Conservative values - Traditional values - American values - Small town values - Family values perspective. There are very few liberals (particularly those of the Teacup Generation), if their absence from the site can be of any indication, interested in "being prepared" for any difficult times or circumstances. Arguably most leftists erroneously hope they can rely on Big government-Welfare state-Nanny state (Obamunism: Income redistribution of ObamaCare-Social Security-FEMA) due to their entitlement mentality indoctrination primarily from the Public school values - Professor values of the Public schools in the United States (Teachers' unions) and from the Hollywood values, San Francisco values and Fashion industry values propaganda machines of the Mainstream media and its liberal media elite. Despite their differences, they all have an interest in preparedness and survivalism. The blog has 1,441 pages of articles.[3]

James Wesley Rawles ("JWR") founded the blog. Rawles is a Conservative Christian Libertarian New York Times best-selling Survivalist author who lives "Somewhere West of the Rockies." JWR is the most popular survivalist author (for both non-fiction and Survivalist fiction / dystopian fiction) according to both the New York Times and Amazon.com and is a former U.S. Army Intelligence officer and technical writer. He is now a full-time novelist and part-time blogger and Survivalist retreat consultant. He founded SurvivalBlog in 2005, and now serves as Senior Editor. Managing Editor, Hugh J. Latimer (“HJL”), handles day-to-day operation of the blog.

JWR is a Christian, and holds to Reformed doctrine / Reformed Churches denomination. He has adopted the determinist view of history,[4][5] and his view of economics is of the fiscally conservative Austrian School of Economics. Politically, JWR is a Constitutionalist Christian libertarian.

Strong Advocates Conservapedia over Wikipedia

The Survival Blog is a staunch advocate of Conservapedia, and Mr. Rawles links to it where possible, doing his best to avoid what frequently calls the "LiberalPropagandaPedia."

JWR has noted, "As I’ve mentioned before, Wikipedia’s editors have strong leftist and statist biases. This is evidenced by the way that they selectively delete content and gradually push the Point of View (POV) of articles to match their world views. According a SurvivalBlog reader in Switzerland, the following section [section not reproduced here] was deleted from Wikipedia by members of an anti-gun Wikipedia cabal on August 14, 2013. (It had been part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns article). Never mentioned in the Wikipedia article was the fact that there are charges pending against at least seven other members of their “crime fighting” organization: Marcus Hook Mayor James ‘Jay’ Schiliro - the “furnishing alcohol to a minor” charge was just dropped on a technicality, but he still faces misdemeanor charges of official oppression, recklessly endangering another person, unlawful restraint and false imprisonment, in a bizarre incident where he tried to force a young man to have homosexual relations, at gunpoint.)"[7], [8]

In general (for non-Conservapedia editors), Rawles, founder/owner of The Survival Blog, has suggested 800 words seems to be a reasonable and commonplace Fair Use excerpt/quoting amount for Fair Use (See Important Fair Use Provisos). However, for editors of Conservapedia, on December 30, 2014, he made a special authorization of 3 times that quantity saying "You are certainly welcome to use up to three quotes of 800 words each, in any of your wiki articles."


Accessing the blog

The blog's primary IP Address is http://64.92.111.122 and a backup IP address of http://50.193.232.247. Survival Blog posts its IPv4 address (also referred to as a “dotted quad” or IP address) as a sort of insurance policy since recent events have proven that a government agency or a malicious hacker can fairly easily seize or hijack a domain name.[9]
