2020 election
Following Rep. Byrne's announcement that he would run for Alabama's Senate seat in 2020 to challenge Democrat Doug Jones,[1] Carl declared his bid for the open House seat.[2] He finished first place in the Republican primary held on March 3, 2020 with 39% of the vote;[3] finishing second place was former state senator Bill Hightower, who polled 37.5%. Since no one garnered a majority, a runoff was held between the two candidates.
During the runoff campaign, Carl and Hightower traded attacks against each other over who was more supportive of Donald Trump.[4] Hightower's campaign ran an attack ad claiming that Carl as County Commissioner engaged in a conflict of interest, which was deemed misleading.[5] Carl, who was endorsed by Byrne,[6] narrowly won the runoff.[7][8]
Carl was endorsed by President Trump for the general election held on November 3rd.[9] Facing Democrat James Averhart in the strongly Republican district, he easily won the race to succeed Byrne.[10]
Tenure
Carl voted in favor of the objections to the Biden electors for the states of Pennsylvania and Arizona.[11][12]
Following the 2021 attack of the Capitol, House Democrats with the support of several anti-Trump RINOs rushed through a sham impeachment against President Trump on the false and absurd presumption that he was directly responsible for the violent breaking and entering of the United States Capitol Building. Carl, along with the vast majority of House Republicans, strongly opposed and voted against the measure.[13]
