John Anthony Barrasso III, M.D., born July 21, 1952 (age 71), is the junior United States Senator from Wyoming, being appointed to the vacancy left by the death of U.S. Senator Craig Thomas. He was elected to the Senate in his own right in 2008 with 73% of the vote. Barrasso, a divorced orthopedic surgeon, had served in the Wyoming State Senate since 2002. He is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.
He was a pro-abortion candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1996, but was defeated in the primary by the more conservative Mike Enzi. He has since declared himself pro-life and made the following statement upon his appointment to the U.S. Senate:
