Mariannette Miller-Meeks (born September 6, 1955 (age 70)) is a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, conservative Republican, and Iowa state senator who ran for United States House of Representatives from the state's 2nd congressional district in the 2020 elections to replace the Democrat David Loebsack. She previously challenged Loebsack multiple times unsuccessfully.[1]
2020 U.S. House election in Iowa's 2nd district
Months following Loebsack's announcement that he would not seek re-election in 2020,[2] Miller-Meeks announced in early October 2019 her run for the seat.[1][3][4] She won her party's primary with a plurality of 58% of the votes cast,[5] and faced Democrat Rita Hart in the general election.[6] Hart was backed the DCCC,[7] and Miller-Meeks received the endorsements of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy,[8] Sen. Joni Ernst,[9] as well as a law enforcement coalition.[10] The election was considered by the Cook Political Report,[11] Politico,[12] and RCP[13] to be a "tossup". The congressional district had been narrowly carried by Donald Trump in the 2016 U.S. presidential election by four percentage points over Hillary Clinton.[14]
A debate between Miller-Meeks and Hart was held on October 8, 2020.[15]
Following many days past Election Day, a recount that Hart had pushed for showed Miller-Meeks winning by merely six votes, and the results were soon certified.[16] Despite losing, Democrat attorney Marc Elias on behalf of Hart filed an effort to overturn the results by appealing to the U.S. House under the Federal Contested Elections Act.[17]
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated on December 30, 2020 that Miller-Meeks will be provisionally seated,[18] as the case will still head to the Committee on House Administration for "review".
She was one of thirty-five Republicans to vote for the Partisan Hack resolution calling for an Investigation on Capital Hill.[19]
