History

Medical College of Virginia was founded in 1838. Separately, the Richmond School of Social Work and Public Health started in 1917 on what today is VCU's Monroe Park Campus. In 1925, the Richmond School became the Richmond division of the College of William and Mary and in 1939, the name changed to Richmond Professional Institute. It seperated from William and Mary in 1962. In 1968, it merged with the Medical College of Virginia to become Virginia Commonwealth University.[2]
