ETA is a terrorist group which aims to create an independent Basque country in northern Spain. Its' full name is "Basque Fatherland and Liberty," and was founded in 1959 during the Franco dictatorship. ETA is responsible for at least 900 killings, including political and law enforcement figures, across Spain. Most occurred in the Basque region, however ETA is active in Madrid and Catalonia as well as other areas.
The U.S. State Department continues to place members of ETA on its watch lists.[1] However, the ETA has become considerably weaker. Credit is given to the Conservative government of José María Aznar for reducing the strength of ETA.
