Marshall University is a West Virginia public university founded in 1837.[2] It ranked #36 in US News's 2008 "Universities-Master's (South): Top Schools" list.[3] The school is named in honor of US Supreme Court Justice John Marshall,[2]
History
The Virginia General Assembly formally incorporated Marshall Academy in 1838.[2] The school closed during the Civil War. During the war, the campus became a part of West Virginia, and in 1867, the West Virginia Legislature established the State Normal School of Marshall College to train teachers.[2] In 1920, Marshall expanded beyond teacher education by adding a Pre-Medic program.[4]
On March 1, 1961, the West Virginia Legislature approved changing the school's name to Marshall University.[5] Marshall had two branch campuses at Logan West Virginia and Williamson West Virginia from 1963 to 1971. They then became a part of the community college system.[6]
On November 14, 1970, the football team, its coaching staff and fans were killed when a plane crashed while returning from a game with East Carolina University.[7] The school conducts an annual memorial service for the those who died in that crash. In 2006, the campus' recovery from the tragedy was protrayed in a commercial film, We Are Marshall.[8] In 1978, the Medical School admitted its first students.[9] Since 2003, the school has sponsored the Marshall University Marathon, the largest marathon in West Virginia.[10]
