In October 2007 the National Enquirer, a tabloid publication, accused Edwards of having an extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter - a claim that Edwards denied. Armed with knowledge that Edwards planned to visit Rielle at her hotel on July 22nd 2008, the Enquirer was waiting and confronted Edwards at 2 A.M. when he left her room after being there for a considerable time. Edwards ran and hid and security was called to escort him out. Edwards was being considered as a Vice Presidential candidate at the time as well as possibly being appointed as Attorney General under an Obama Presidency.

Edwards said he does not dignify lies with responses and would only state it was untrue in a quick statement. Even with Fox's news coup, the other networks and internet sites were still silent.

Apparently, a close political friend of John Edwards had been sending Hunter $15,000 a month, an occurence that Edwards says he knew nothing about and may just be due to the kindness of his friend's philanthropy helping out a person in distress. The general feeling is that this scandal has put a serious career ending dent into Edwards' political prospects. It has removed him from Vice Presidential consideration and hampered the chances for Presidential convention speaches and of his becoming Attorney General.
