Johns Hopkins

Johns Hopkins University is a Maryland, private university, founded as the nation's first research university[2] in 1876 under Daniel Coit Gilman.[3] It is named after merchant Johns Hopkins, who died in 1873, leaving $7 million dollars to build a university and hospital in his name (the hospital opened in 1889).[2] The school ranked #14 in USNews' 2008 "National Universities: Top Schools" list.[4] Johns Hopkins ranks first among United States universities in receipt of federal research and development funds.[5] The School of Medicine ranks first among medical schools in receipt of extramural awards from the National Institutes of Health.[5] The Bloomberg School of Public Health is first among all public health schools in research support from the federal government.[5]

Athletics

The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team has won 9 championships and finished second 8 times.[6]
