The school is named for former Supreme Court justice Louis Dembitz Brandeis - the first Jewish justice.[7][8][3] In 1985, Brandeis was elected to membership in the Association of American Universities, which represents the 62 leading research universities in the United States and Canada.[8]
Athletics
The school's mascot, Ollie the Owl,[9] is named after Louis Brandeis's colleague, Oliver Wendell Holmes.[10] Brandeis competes in the University Athletic Association (UAA), a unique Division III affiliation.[11]
